
Dhaka City College will remain closed today (Tuesday) following the daylong students’ protest on Monday demanding resignation of its acting principal and vice-principal.
The students blocked the New Market-Mirpur road which caused huge public sufferings following traffic congestion.
The authorities of the college are scheduled to hold meetings with teachers and the governing body members today to take decisions regarding the demand of the students.
Several hundred students of the college came to the streets boycotting classes and examinations after 12:00pm on Monday to press home their demands.
The demands include the resignations of the acting principal Kazi Neamul Hoq and vice-principal Muklasur Rahman, an end to repression on teachers in the name of reform, an end to harassments of the guardians and an end to taking extra money in the name of different fees.Â
The students blocked the New Market-Mirpur road for around one hour causing huge traffic congestion.
Police and Army rushed to the spot to control the situation at around 1:00pm. The students left the street and blocked the gates of the college.
Students chanted slogans demanding the resignations and removed the nameplate from the vice-principal’s office.
Olif Khan, a student of the college, alleged that the principal and the vice-principal took the posts forcefully and destroyed the academic environment in the college.
Shahariar Mahir, a representative of the students, alleged that two teachers of the college Jahangir Hossain and Shahinur Sobhan were suspended over the allegation of threatening the students.
Following a meeting of the teachers, students and army personnel in the afternoon, Science Laboratory Army camp commander Major Syed Resvan Rahman announced that the authorities were positive regarding the demands.
He requested the protesting students to allow the authorities a day to take steps following the procedure.
Dhaka University physics professor and governing body president ABM Obaidul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he was not much aware about the issue as he was abroad.
‘I have called a meeting with all the teachers of the college tomorrow to know what had happened. Decision will be taken after the meeting,’ said Obaidul.
After the student-led mass uprising that forced Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India on August 5, divisional commissioner appointed Kazi Neamul Hoq and Muklasur Rahman as acting principal and vice-principal following the demands of students and teachers, he added.
About the suspension of two teachers, he said, ‘A committee will be formed by the college to investigate the allegation and to take further action.’ Â
The students left the campus premises at around 5:00pm.
