In the 25th phase of the relocation process, 506 Rohingya refugees on Tuesday arrived at Bhasan Char, an island upazila of Hatiya in Noakhali.
According to officials, Rohingya refugees were transported from Chattogram to Bhasan Char in two Navy ships around noon.
Earlier, on Monday morning, they were taken from different camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf to a temporary transit point set up at Ukhiya College.
Later in that night, over 20 buses transported them to Chattogram.
Bhasan Char Police Station officer-in-Charge Abu Jafar confirmed the information.
He said that relocation of the Rohingya refugees is an ongoing process.
The last relocation took place on March 1, in which 1,242 Rohingyas were brought to Bhasan Char in the 24th phase.
With the 25th batch, a total of 35,283 Rohingyas have been relocated to Bhasan Char since December 3, 2020.
The Awami League-led government, spending some Tk 3,100 crore, prepared housing facilities for one lakh people in Bhasan Char.
On June 7, 2021, Human Rights Watch published a report terming Bhasan Char ‘an island jail in the middle of the sea’.
Observer Research Foundation on May 24, 2023 published a report titled ‘From Cox’s Bazar to Bhasan Char: An Assessment of Bangladesh’s Relocation Plan for Rohingya Refugees’.
It said that the facilities on the island might not be adequate to sustain the Rohingyas if a disaster strikes.
The report also said that concerns over the provisions for health, livelihood, education and security on the island still persisted.
