Two suspected muggers were beaten to death by an angry mob at Bholahat upazila in Chapainawabganj on Wednesday night.

The deceased were Alamgir Hossain, 25, and his younger brother Yakub Ali, 22. They were residents of Durgapur Kamarpara village under Jambaria union in the upazila.


Quoting witnesses, Shahinur Rahman, officer-in-charge Bholahat police station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that a group of four muggers including Alamgir and Yakub stopped an auto-rickshaw and attempted to mug its passengers on Borogachhi-Rohanpur regional road in Khapanir Beel area at around 8:30pm on Wednesday.

Hearing the screams of the passengers, local people rushed to the spot and chased away the muggers, he said, adding that local people at one stage of chasing held Alamgir and Yakub and beat them severely, leaving the brothers dead on the spot.

The police officer said that, on information, they went to the spot, recovered the bodies, and sent them to the Chapainawabganj 250-bed district hospital for autopsy.

‘One of the brothers was accused in a robbery case filed with the police station in June,’ he said, adding that filing a case in connection to Wednesday night’s incident was underway.
