Bangladesh women’s football team will receive their due salaries as soon as possible, as stated by the press secretary to the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Shafiqul Alam, on Thursday.
Bangladesh women’s team returned home after their successful SAFF campaign, edging hosts Nepal 2-1 in the final to retain their title.
The players have been deprived of their salary for the last two months, while their coach, Peter Butler, has not received three months’ salary.
The interim government is set to engage in discussions with the Bangladesh Football Federation, stating the issue was created during the former BFF president Kazi Salahuddin’s tenure.
‘Muhammad Yunus-led advisory council discussed the issue at its weekly meeting and decided to resolve the issue as soon as possible,’ CA’s press advisor Shafiqul Alam said at a press conference.
He said the issue of overdue salaries came to the fore again after the girls won the SAFF title for the second time in a row.
Shafiqul also said the government is discussing equal pay for women athletes in the country.
‘Our government would talk to the BFF and BCB [Bangladesh Cricket Board] in this regard. We want to ensure an end to this type of disparity,’ Shafiqul said.
Amid the salary issue, the board organised a grand annual general meeting with councillors during the election on October 26.
