Leaders of different political parties on Thursday at a discussion in Dhaka called on the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus to give the next general election as early as possible after implementing some required reforms.

The discussion was organised to mark the 52nd founding anniversary of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal.


Factions of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal observed the anniversary of the party holding discussions in Dhaka.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD held a discussion at the  National Press Club where the party president, ASM Abdur Rob chaired.

At the event, Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called on the interim government to hold the next general election as early as possible.

Referring to the issue of reforms of the ruling system and the constitution, Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘As an interim government you are not required to implement all the reforms. You give a credible general election within the shortest possible time holding some reforms.’

The elected government would do the rest of the reforms with the consent of the people of the country, Fakhrul said.

He called on advisory council members of the interim government to refrain from making such comments that create controversy among the people. 

ASM Abdur Rob said, ‘We must reform the ruling system and introduce a bicameral parliament, which is pledged in the 31-point carter of demands of the Ganatantra Mancha.

‘We want to establish such a democratic ruling system in the country that no fascist rule can be introduced further’ ASM Abdur Rob said.

Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that the interim government should sit with all the political parties to fix the tenure for holding reforms and they should work for implementation of the spirits of the recent students and people movement.

Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that the interim government so far failed to control law and order as well as the price hike of essential commodities.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that they would restore the voting rights of the people and ensure their democratic rights.

Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, Rastra Sanskar Andolan central leader Faridul Haque, JSD senior vice-president Tania Rob, general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon, central leaders Siraj Miah and Kamal Uddin Patwary and others also spoke at the discussion meeting.

The Bangladesh Jasod held a discussion and reunion at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh where its president Sharif Nurul Ambia chaired.

He called on the interim government to hold the next general election within a justified time implementing required reforms.

Gonoforum faction general secretary Subrata Chowdhury, Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince, journalist Abu Sayeed Khan, Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz, Bangladesh Jasod general secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan, central leaders Monjur Ahmed Monju, Mustaq Husain, Karim Shikder, Badal Khan and others spoke at the discussion.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod held a discussion at its central office where its central leader Shafiuddin Mollah chaired.

Central leaders Obaidul Haque Chunnu, Anwarul Haque, Saifuzzaman Badsha and others spoke at the discussion, a press release said.
