The students of Dhaka University-affiliated seven colleges are going to boycott all academic activities, including classes and examinations, on their respective campuses for two days from today demanding a separate university.
At a press conference, held on Saturday, the students also announced that they would also stage demonstrations at their respective colleges on these two days.
If their demands are not met by Monday, they will go for a tougher movement, they added.
The press conference was held on the premises of Dhaka College on Saturday and attended by the representatives of the students of seven colleges — Dhaka College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, Eden Mohila College, Government Bangla College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Government Titumir College, and Kabi Nazrul Government College.
Their demands are a separate autonomous university to govern these seven colleges and formation of a commission to facilitate the transformation once the university is founded.
The interim government would set up a separate facility at Dhaka University to carry out administrative works of seven colleges, chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam told a press briefing on October 31.
He said that the representatives of the seven colleges on the day talked to education adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud and youth and sports adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and they came up with the decision.
On October 24, the education ministry formed a 13-member committee to solve the academic and administrative problems of the seven colleges.
Dhaka University students, meanwhile, on Friday issued an ultimatum demanding cancellation of the affiliation of seven colleges with the DU within 72 hours.
While reading out a paper, Jakaria Bari, a student of Kabi Nazrul Govt College, Dhaka, claimed that no decision was made on October 31.
‘We have rejected the education ministry committee and press secretary’s recent statement on separate administrative facilities at Dhaka University for the seven colleges,’ he said.
Jakaria Bari alleged that a vested quarter was trying to foil the movement.
They are against separate administrative facilities inside the DU campus, Zakaria said, adding that they demand a strong and effective transformation commission including student representatives from the seven colleges that will work to establish a separate autonomous university.
‘On Sunday and Monday no students from these colleges will take part in any academic classes and exams and hold protest rallies at the colleges peacefully,’
Replying to a question, he said that for taking any decision the government have to meet the representatives fixed by the students.
Admitting the fact that their road blockade caused huge sufferings to the people, Jakaria said that they would be forced to continue their movement.
The students blocked major city roads on October 29 and 30 causing huge sufferings to the city dwellers.
Under these colleges about 1.67 lakh students are studying.
These colleges came under Dhaka University in 2017 and before that these were under the National University.
