
Over a hundred people under the banner of anti-discrimination students and people on Saturday evening vandalised and set fire to Jatiya Party’s Khulna city and district offices while police stood guard outside its central office in Dhaka.
Confirming the attack on JP Khulna office in the city’s Dak Bungalow Mor, JP secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunnu said that Khulna leaders told him that the Jatiya Party’s district and city offices were vandalised and set on fire after Maghrib prayers.
‘I cannot say more details right now,’ Chunnu added.
Khulna Sadar police station officer-in-charge Md Munir Ul Gias Saud said that 50-60 unidentified youths vandalised some chairs and tables in the Jatiya Party office.
‘Youths also burnt two chairs outside the office,’ the OC added.
JP Rangpur city and district unit brought out a protest procession in the city on Saturday afternoon protesting at the attack and vandalism on the Party central office in Dhaka city, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in the district reported.Â
Earlier in the morning, the leaders and activists assembled in the party office on Central Road of the city.
Later, they brought out a procession holding sticks and marched the main roads of the city till 1:30pm.
Following the procession, they held a protest rally in the city’s Payra Chattar where JP co-chairman and former Rangpur city mayor Mostafizur Rhaman Mostafa and JP district unit member secretary, among others, spoke.
Speakers warned the attackers of consequence and vowed to stay in the party office. In Dhaka, police cordoned off the JP’s central office along with and the adjacent areas throughout the day.
DMP Ramna Division deputy commissioner Masud Alam said that they had deployed additional police force to avoid untoward situation in the area and so that none could hold programme defying ban.
Tension began when Anti-Fascist Students, Workers, and Mass group vandalised the JP central office and set it on fire on allegations of attacking their processions on Thursday evening while JP denied the allegations.
Student organisers announced programme at the place of JP’s pre-announced programme forcing Dhaka Metropolitan Police to slap a ban on any kind of public gatherings in the area for Saturday.
On Friday night, JP cancelled its pre-scheduled programme.
On October 26, JP staged demonstrations in Rangpur protesting at the visit of Student Movement Against Discrimination central coordinator Sarjis Alam.
The tension among the students-people and JP started increasing following the programme.
Today, JP is scheduled to hold a meeting at party chairman’s Banani office and secretary general Mujibul Haque Chunna requested all additional and deputy secretary generals of the party to attend the meeting.
Party presidium member, also additional secretary general, Jahirul Islam Jahir told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they would likely to discuss the issue of holding a protest rally in Dhaka.
Juba Adhikar Parishad, a front organisation of Gano Adhikar Parishad, brought out a torch procession in the city on Friday night demanding a ban on Jatiya Party, state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported.Â
Protesting at the attack on Anti-Facism Student, Worker and People’s Movement in the capital by the Jatiya Party, widely considered as an ally of Awami League, the procession began from Ferryghat area at Lower Jashore Road and concluded at Dak Bungalow intersection.
Jatiya Party is blamed to be a close ally of the ousted Awami League government, reportedly for helping the fascist regime to cling to power through controversial general elections in 2014, 2018 and 2024.
