Bangladesh Coast Guard arrested leader of notorious ‘Belayet Bahini’ and its three active members with arms at Sadar upazila of Bhola district early Monday.
The arrested persons are gang leader Md Belayet Hossain, 61, his associates Sheikh Farid, 37, Md Kamal, 52 and Md Al Amin, 21, said a press release.
A joint operation was conducted by BCG Base Bhola under Coast Guard south zone in coordination with police at the no-5 Bapta Union of the upazila between 2:30am and 5:00am Monday. Later, joint forces arrested the four individuals and seized two indigenous firearms, two live ammunitions and four indigenous weapons from their possession.
The arrested have been carrying out various crimes, including extortion, land grabbing and intimidation, under the leadership of Belayet for a long time. There are several cases, including murder and extortion, against Belayet.
The arrested along with the seized arms were handed over to Bhola Sadar police station, added the release.
