Thousands of people, including Qawmi madrasha students and teachers, from across Bangladesh started gathering the conference venue from early Tuesday leading to huge traffic congestions in Shahbagh, New Market, Bangla Motor and other areas in the city.
The Islamic conference — organised by Ulemah Mashayekh Bangladesh aimed to protect Tabligh Jamaat, Qwami madrassahs and Islam — raised nine-point demand, announced by Maulana Mahfuzul Haque, including declaring Ahmadiyyas as non-Muslims in Bangladesh, withdrawal of all false cases filed during the Awami regime against Islamic scholars.
Other demands include making religious studies compulsory in the general education syllabuses at all levels, not allowing Indian Tabligh Jamaat chief Muhammad Saad Kandhlawi to come to Bangladesh, restricting the entry of Saad’s supporters at the Kakrail Mosque — Tabligh’s headquarters in Bangladesh, and Biswa Ijtema oragnised annually at Tongi, and running those under the supervision of ulemah, punishment for the attackers on madrasa students-teachers by Saad’s supporters in 2018.
