US tech giant Meta illegally harvested sensitive data including on sexual orientation from nearly a million South Korean Facebook users and shared it with advertisers, Seoul鈥檚 data watchdog said Tuesday.

The firm, which also owns Instagram, violated South Korean laws prohibiting the use of information on political opinions, religious beliefs and people鈥檚 sex life unless the individual provides explicit consent, Seoul鈥檚 Personal Information Protection Commission said.

The tech giant聽collected sensitive information from around 9,80,000 domestic users in South Korea through their Facebook profiles, including details about their religious beliefs and whether they are in a same-sex relationship.
