Theatre troupe Spardha: Independent Theatre Collective on Thursday premiered its studio production titled Tabuo Jege Uthi at Mir Taj Square of West Panthapath in Dhaka.

Designed and directed by Mohsina Akhter, a member of the Spardhaa, the movement-based performance production, Tabuo Jege Uthi, portrays repression on women.

The title of the play is the Bangla translation of Maya Angelou’s poem titled And Still I Rise.

A 45-minute duration production, the play shows a society where women are grown up to be considered as beautiful and men as a symbol of strength.

The play also depicts the struggle of women in patriarchal society, their suppression by various social and religious beliefs, and their uprising.

Sharmin Akter Shorme, Sifat Nowrin Bonhi, Fariha Jannat Mim, Marium Rupa, Naima Tasnim, Riasat Salekin, Saiful Islam, Rabi Prarombho, Salauddin Evan and Mehedi Hasan Sohan have portrayed different roles in the play.

Shahnaz Parvin Jonaki, Ashfakur Rahman Chamak, Anirudha Anu and Moinak Kanungo have played music in the production.

Mohsina Akhter said that they would like to introduce a platform, which would promote the acting of the beginners in theatre.

‘We also want to make a series of productions as touring studio plays, which will feature contemporary social crises,’ added Mohsina Akhter.

The production is designed to stage at any space with minimal arrangement.
