Noor Hossain Day will be observed today commemorating the sacrifice of the young campaigner for democracy who was gunned down by the police at Zero Point in Dhaka on November 10, 1987.
Noor Hossain, a motor driver by profession, caught the imagination of the nation with the slogans ‘down with autocracy’ written on his bare chest and ‘let democracy be free’ on his bare back.
He was participating in a demonstration against the autocratic ruler HM Ershad when the police shot him dead.
After his death, the Zero Point at Gulistan was renamed as Noor Hossain Square.
His death added momentum to the movement for democracy which eventually turned into a popular uprising that led to the fall of Ershad on December 6, 1990.
Political parties and socio-cultural organisations have been observing the day ever since as Shaheed Noor Hossain Day.
Different political parties and socio-cultural organisations will place wreaths at Noor Hossain Square and at his grave at Jurain in the city to mark the day.
