The body of a five-year-old girl was recovered early Sunday at Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet seven days after she went missing.

The victim is Muntaha Akter, daughter of Shamim Ahmed of Bhararifowd village under the Sadar union  at the Kanaighat upazila, the police said.

Confirming the incident, Kanaighat circle assistant superintendent of police, Alak Kanti Sharma, said that villagers caught a woman red-handed at about 3:00am on Sunday when she was trying to remove the body of Muntaha from a ditch adjacent to the victim’s home.

On information, a team of the Kanaighat police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, which was buried in the mud of the ditch, he said.

‘The police also detained the woman, Alifjan, 55, after rescuing her from the hands of local people,’ the ASP said.

He said that Alifjan’s daughter Marzia Akter, 25, who was a house tutor of Muntaha had been dismissed recently by the victim’s family.

‘The body was sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital at noon for post-mortem examination,’ the ASP said.

He said that something like rope was found twisted around the victim’s neck after recovering her body.

The ASP also said that the victim might have been suffocated to death.

Earlier at noon on November 3, Muntaha went out of her parents’ house to play with neighbouring children and did not return home even after that late afternoon, forcing her family to file a general diary in this regard with the Kanaighat police station.

Sylhet superintendent of police Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· in the afternoon that four people, including three women, were arrested so far for their suspected involvement in the killing of Muntaha.

‘One of the arrested had already confessed to her involvement in the murder,’ the SP said, adding that the killing allegedly took place over a trivial incident.

‘Having been dismissed from teaching the child, the tutor might have killed the victim. There might be more other reasons and investigation is underway to confirm these,’ the police officer said.

He also said that whether other people were involved in the killing would be known after the interrogation.
