
Samiul Islam Rafi set two more national records as Bangladesh Navy continued their dominance for the second successive day of the 33rd National Swimming, Diving, and Water Polo Competition at the Syed Nazrul Islam National Swimming Complex in Mirpur on Sunday.
Navy swimmer Rafi, who set a new record in the men’s 50m backstroke on the opening day by clocking 00.26.79 seconds to break his own record of 00.26.90 seconds made in 2023, excelled in the men’s 200m individual medley and men’s 200m backstroke events.Â
In the 200m individual medley, Rafi took 02.09.99 seconds, while 02.10.87 seconds in the 200m backstroke to touch the finish line.Â
The previous record in the men’s 200m individual medley was 02.10.77 seconds set by Kajol Mia of Navy in 2023, while Rafi broke his own record of 02.11.86 seconds in the men’s 200m backstroke event made in 2023.
Bangladesh Army’s Romana Akter claimed her second gold after clocking 02.51.35 seconds in the women’s 200m breaststroke and broke her own record of 02.51.90 seconds that she made in 2016.Â
Romana, earlier on day one, won her first gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke by clocking 01.18.27 seconds to break the previous record of 01.19.00 seconds made by Navy’s Mariam Akter in 2021.
After the end of the second day, Navy were leading the medal table with 36 medals—17 gold, 13 silver, and six bronze — followed by Army with 24 medals – four gold, eight silver, and 12 bronze.
