Environment, forest and climate change adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Tuesday announced that the forest department would not plant any eucalyptus and acacia trees on forestland to ensure diversity.
She also said that biodiversity rules and guidelines would be revised to protect biodiversity in the country.
She also emphasised the importance of involving students in wildlife and forest-related activities at the range office level.
She came up with the remarks at a meeting held at the Forest Department office in Agargaon, said a press release.
She instructed the forest department to preserve other tree species except for eucalyptus and acacia trees planted for social forestry along roadsides.
The adviser highlighted the need to establish management committees for protected forests such as Lathitila, Chunati, Satchari, and Lawachara.
She also called for an end to eco-tourism and picnicking in these forests and emphasised stopping music and noise disturbances to maintain the natural environment of the forests.
She further said that illegal encroachments on forestland must be removed, while no lobbying would be tolerated.
Conflicts with forest dwellers should be addressed, and harassment cases against the Garo community should be dropped, the adviser also said.
The environment adviser directed relevant officials to implement a strategic plan, a gender policy, a grievance redress system, and ensure transparency in project information.
Additional secretaries to the ministry, ASM Humayun Kabir, Fahmida Khanam, joint secretary Shamima Begum, chief conservator of forests Amir Hossain Chowdhury, and other senior Forest Department officials were present at the meeting.
