Two former Awami League lawmakers have been arrested at separate places in the capital and they were sent to jail on Thursday in cases over murders during the recent student-led mass uprising.

The police arrested former AL lawmaker for Dhaka-7 Mohammad Solaiman Salim in the early hours of Thursday in the city鈥檚 Gulshan area and The Rapid Action Battalion arrested Bhola-2 MP Ali Azam Mukul from Dhaka鈥檚 Hazaribagh area on Wednesday evening.

The Court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Zunaid on Thursday sent former lawmaker Solaiman Salim to jail in a case filed over the murder of Rakib Hawlader during the Student Movement against Discrimination.

On August 5, Rakib sustained bullet injuries as the AL and its front and associate bodies fired live rounds and hurled crude bombs on the protesters during the movement at Chankharpool crossing.

The AL miscreants even stopped the people from rescuing Rakib and taking him to the nearest hospital.

Mohammad Solaiman Salim, son of former Awami League lawmaker Haji Salim, was elected as lawmaker in January 7 general elections, boycotted by major opposition political parties, including Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Meanwhile, the Court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah on the day sent former Bhola-2 lawmaker Ali Azam Mukul to jail in a case filed with the Mirpur Model Police Station over the murder of student Nahidul Islam.

Mukul, nephew of veteran AL leader Tofail Ahmed, was arrested in several cases, including murder.

On July 19, Nahidul was killed while taking part in the student movement in the capital鈥檚 Mirpur area.

His cousin filed the case on September 1 against 41 people, including Mukul.
