A 38-year-old man killed his two sons by slitting their throats before attempting to commit suicide at Baigartek in the capital’s Pallabi area on Saturday.

The deceased are Bijoy, 7, and Musa, 4.

The condition of their father, Mohammad Ahad, a security guard by profession, who was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital was stated to be critical.

Pallabi police station sub-inspector Majedul Islam said that the incident took place at their rented home at  about 10:00am.

He said that the police, on information, rushed to the spot and took the boys and their father to the Kurmitola General Hospital where the duty doctors declared the boys dead.

The police officer said that Mohammad Ahad was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Ahad tried to commit suicide with a knife, he said and added that the deceased boys’ mother was taken to the police station for interrogation.

The police said that the boys’ mother used to work as domestic help.

They, however, refused to share any further information that they could extract from her.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s deputy commissioner for Mirpur Division Md Makhsudur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the two bodies were sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College for post-mortem examination.

‘We assume that family dispute led to the murders and attempted suicide,’ Makhsudur said.

He said that the family dispute might have occurred from financial crisis as they were from a lower-income group.
