At least one activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party was killed and 6 others were injured on Saturday as rival factions in the party clashed in the morning over establishing supremacy at Hemayetpur union in Pabna.

The deceased is Jalal Uddin, 40, a resident of Kazipara in Hemayetpur union.

Pabna police station officer-in-charge Abdus Salam confirmed the incident.

Jalal died on his way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital at about 1:00pm on Saturday, the officer said.

Pabna district BNP office secretary Jahurul Islam Janan said that Jalal was an active BNP activist.

The incident took place at Betepara adjacent to Pabna Mental Hospital at Hemayetpur at around 9:00am on Saturday.

Police and locals said that two factions– one led by Hemayeetpur union’s former chairman and district BNP member Muntaj Ali and the other led by former general secretary of the union’s BNP unit Abul Hasem–clashed with locally made sharp weapons.

Earlier on Friday night, the factions also clashed briefly at an Islamic conference in the area.

The Saturday morning clash that lasted over an hour was allegedly a sequel to the previous clash, the police officer said.

During the clash, supporters of the factions swooped on each other with sharp weapons, leaving one person dead and six others injured, the OC said.

The feuding factions also vandalised several shops in the Betepara area, the police officer said, adding that the injured are undergoing treatment at Pabna General Hospital.

The situation was brought under control and army personnel and police were deployed at the scene to avoid any untoward situation, the OC added.
