The victims and families of the victims of July Uprising, student leaders and educationists on Saturday demanded inclusion of the uprising in the textbooks.

At a roundtable, they also demanded exclusion of all politically motivated and substandard contents from the textbooks which were largely included in the past 15 years.


The roundtable was organised by Shiksha Odhikar Sangsad at the National Academy for Educational Management in the capital.

The sangsad presented a paper titled ‘Inclusion of July uprising heroism in textbooks: proposals of Shiksha Odhikar Sangsad’ at the event, said a press release.

The paper proposed removing all politically motivated contents from the textbooks, inclusion of the events and the sacrifice of victims of the July uprising, reviewing the history of Bangladesh and the Liberation War of 1971 by knowledgeable historians before including in the textbooks and formation of a modern and updated curriculum. 

Sanjida Khan, mother of Shahriar Khan Anas, and Farzana Haque, sister of Ikramul Haque Sajid, both killed during uprising, and Jasim Uddin, a student wounded in the uprising, urged the government to highlight the sacrifices and courage of the protesters in the textbooks for the next generation.

The University Grants Commission member professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan said that solidarity became necessary after the 2024 uprising as divisions are growing.

The roundtable was also attended by National curriculum coordination committee member and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology professor Syeda Sultana Razia, educationist Rakhal Raha, Shiksha Odhikar Sangsad convener and North South University professor M Niaz Asadullah, the sangsad’s member secretary and Jagannath University assistant professor Md Shahnawaz Khan Chandan and teachers of different educational institutions.
