A group of Dhaka University students on Sunday demanded cancellation of affiliations of seven colleges with the university.

They made the demand at a press conference held at Dhaka University’s Madhur Canteen on Sunday afternoon.

Requesting the university administration to refrain from handling the affairs of the seven colleges in the forthcoming academic year, the students said that if new students were enrolled at the affiliated colleges in the 2024-25 academic year, the administration would be held accountable.

The students also claimed that the affiliation of the seven colleges was tarnishing the image of the university.

No buildings for the affiliated colleges should be constructed on the premises of the university, they said, adding that the inclusion of 2,67,000 students from these colleges is adversely affecting Dhaka University’s ranking and disrupting the university’s regular academic activities.

Mohammad Abbas Uddin, a student of the Arabic department, said, ‘We have recently learnt about a plan of Dhaka University administration to construct separate buildings for the seven colleges on the DU campus. We will not accept it.’

He further said that Dhaka University had 43,000 students, and the administration failed to provide necessary facilities to them.

‘Yet, they are taking responsibility for 2,67,000 more students from the affiliated colleges,’ he added.

Nafiur Rahman Rakib, another DU student, said that none of the students wanted the seven colleges to remain affiliated with Dhaka University.

‘If our demands are not met, we will announce strict programmes,’ he said.
