The adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan said that political parties were hindering efforts to ban the Awami League from doing politics on charge of mass killing during the recent anti-discrimination movement.

‘When we, as representatives of the interim government, discuss banning the Awami League, political parties attempt to obstruct us,’ Asif, also the adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, said on Sunday.

Asif Mahmud made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at a discussion titled New Eyes: Mass Uprising and Future Bangladesh at Jahangirnagar University on Monday night.

Referring to the 2024 student-led mass uprising, Asif said, ‘Uprooting of the fascist system was one of our motives. But it has not yet been possible to completely eradicate the curse.’

He said that the administration filled with Awami League people was a reason behind the failure.

The adviser also warned of continued conspiracies from national and international arena for political rehabilitation of the Awami League.

‘A vested quarter is trying to include Awami League in the next general election despite their role in mass killing during the movement,’ he argued.

Asif said, ‘Some embassies are pressuring us to ensure Awami League’s participation in elections.’

‘I was asked by a German journalist if banning the Awami League would pose a threat to democracy. I reminded them that the Nazi Party was banned in 1945. The Bangladesh Awami League deserves a similar fate,’ he added.

JU vice-chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, pro-vice-chancellors Sohel Ahmed and Mahfuzur Rahman, treasurer Abdur Rab, student coordinator Saiyeed Abdullah, lawyer Manzur Al Matin, among others, addressed the discussion.

The student-led mass uprising forced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India on August 5.
