Home affairs adviser retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday described the majority of the cases filed against different individuals following the recent mass uprising as ‘fake’.

The adviser made the remarks while exchanging views with the journalists at the Media Center of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office in Dampara Police Lines in the afternoon.

He said, ‘The majority of these cases are fabricated. Previously, the police used to file such fake cases, listing 10 names and adding 50 anonymous individuals. Now, people are filing cases against 50 named and 10 anonymous individuals. We are taking steps to ensure no one faces undue harassment.’

Addressing queries about the current state of law enforcement in Chattogram, the adviser said, ‘The law enforcement situation here is fair but not yet fully satisfactory. We are working to improve it, and once it reaches a satisfactory level, I believe it will get even better.’

In a rhetorical remark, he questioned, ‘When was the law enforcement situation perfect? You always say it isn’t good, but you never point out when it was good. A peaceful Durga Puja was recently held, yet such achievements are often understated.’

When asked whether police morale has improved, Lt Gen Chowdhury responded, ‘The morale of the police is gradually improving. If the graph trends upward, it is a positive sign; if trends downward, it’s a concern. Currently, the morale graph is on the rise, but we need to give it more time.’

Regarding the 2,000 police members who have not yet reported for duty, he said, ‘Those who have not joined work are criminals in our view. They will be brought to justice and held accountable under the law.’

The event was attended by Inspector General of Police Mainul Islam, CMP commissioner Hasib Aziz, Chattogram deputy commissioner Farida Khanam, and RAB director general Shahidur Rahman.
