Battery-run rickshaw drivers blocked several roads in the capital demanding access to the main roads of the city on Wednesday, a day after the High Court ordered a ban on battery-run rickshaws on Dhaka streets.
They also demanded government intervention in rehabilitating them before banning their vehicles in the capital.
Rickshaw pullers staged protests in several areas in Dhaka city such as Jatrabari, Mohammadpur, Babubazar Bridge area, Demra and Mirpur, causing traffic congestion in those areas from the morning.
Commuters were seen getting off the buses and started walking towards their destinations.
Meanwhile, a clash erupted between protesters and police at Dayaganj crossing near Jatrabari, leaving two police officers injured.
The protest started at about 12:00pm and continued till about 2:00pm, causing severe traffic congestion in the area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional commissioner for traffic Khondaker Nazmul Hasan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Wednesday afternoon that law enforcement members requested the protesters to clear the road but the protesters refused and turned violent.
‘The protesters blocked the road, demanding the right to ply on the streets of Dhaka. Police asked them to clear the area when severe traffic congestion occurred, but they attacked the police instead. Two officers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment,’ he said.
Later, additional police reached the spot and brought the situation under control, he said, adding that at least 500 rickshaw pullers were present at the protest.
On Tuesday, a High Court bench directed the authorities concerned to stop the operation of the vehicles in the city within three days.
