The Democratic Students’ Alliance on Thursday staged a torch procession, demanding an end to harassment and repression on autorickshaw puleers, on Dhaka University campus.

They also protested against the attacks on the rickshaw pullers.

The procession began from the Teacher-Student Centre and concluded at the Anti-Violence Raju Memorial Sculpture.

Moderated by Jabir Ahmed Jubel, general secretary of the Revolutionary Students Unity, the protesters also held a rally at the base of the sculpture.

Coordinator of the students’ alliance and president of the Socialist Students’ Front Salman Siddiqui stated that they condemned the attacks and baton charges by the army and police throughout the day.

‘The government has opened fire on garment workers during their protests. Rickshaw drivers’ movements are being labeled as an Awami League’s return, and we reject all this,’ said Salman Siddiqui.

He further said that they had witnessed various governments, and they always seemed to act against workers. ‘We hoped that this government would consider the situation of 2.2 million drivers. But the government is ignoring it.’

The rally was also attended by Chhatra Union’s Dhaka city unit president Faisal Mahmud, Democratic Students’ Council president Saiedul Hoq Nissan, among others.
