The school for persons with visual impairments constructed about seven years ago at a cost of over Tk 1 crore on the Pabna-Chatmohar road in Pabna has yet to be opened.

According to the authorities concerned, the two-storey Integrated Visually Impaired School, funded by the Ministry of Social Welfare, could not be opened as the government has not employed teachers or staff yet.

Md Rashedul Kabir, deputy director of the Social Services Department, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the school could not be opened as the necessary manpower was not employed.

Mentioning that there are about 6,225 visually impaired people in nine upazilas of Pabna district, of whom 25 per cent are students, he said, ‘We are considering arranging education for several visually impaired students in regular schools, as the specialised school has not opened.’

Although positions for various posts, including resident teachers and teachers with Braille skills, were created in 2017, only a security guard has been hired so far, Rashedul said.

During a recent visit to the school, this correspondent observed that local residents hung around inside the school boundary and threw litter in the school area.

The school building was found locked, but the structure appeared to be in a good condition, except for some places where plaster on the eastern wall had fallen off.

Lutfur Rahman, a local resident, said, ‘The government has shown irresponsibility by not opening this school important for persons with visual impairments, who need to be educated in Braille.’
