Rights activists and apparel workers’ leaders demanded justice and compensation for victims of Tazreen Fashions fire marking the 12th anniversary of the incident in the capital on Sunday.

Garments Sramik Oikya Forum organised a rally in front of Tazreen factory in Ashulia, where its president Mushrefa Mishu demanded trial of the killers of the factory workers in the incident and compensations for the wounded workers.

Expressing his concerns, general secretary of the organisation, Shahidul Islam Sabuj, said that the trial had not been completed in the past 12 years.

Bangladesh Garment Sramik Samhati, Garment Workers Trade Union Centre and some others garment workers rights bodies also placed wreaths on the temporarily built monument in front of the Tazreen Fashions at Ashulia.

The leaders of the organisations said that the family members of the victims were denied justice even after 12 years of the incident due to time-consuming legal procedure and a culture of indemnity.

The speakers demanded justice for the fire incident, rehabilitation of those who survived, a safer workplace and a minimum monthly wage of Tk 25,000 for the apparel workers.

Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust in a press statement demanded trials of the killers of the workers and also compensations for the wounded workers in the incident.

More than 100 workers were killed in the fire at Tazreen Fashions at Ashulia on November 24, 2012.
