
At least 25 people were injured in a clash between the students of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute and the Bangladesh University of Textiles from Sunday through early Monday in the capital’s Tejgaon area.
The clash broke out at about 9:00pm on Sunday night at Aziz Hall of BUTEX and spread to the both institutes and roads and it continued till 1:30am on Monday.
A tense situation was prevailing throughout the Monday and additional police forces were deployed in the area.
Confirming the matter, BUETX director for students’ welfare Riazul Islam said that the clash broke out at Aziz Hall as the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute unit members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal entered the dormitory compound and started taking drugs.
‘When our students prevented the drug users, they vandalised Aziz Hall and attacked the students,’ he said, adding that later the clash spread to the institutions.
He said that 25 BUTEXÂ students were injured and 12 of them were in critical condition.
Riazul also said that the critically injured were undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, New Life Hospital Limited, National Institute of Neuro Sciences and Hospital and National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital.
The clash broke out again after army personnel left the place at about 1:00am, said a BUTEX Yarn engineering department student Sheikh Tasbiur Rahman.
‘Chattra Dal leaders of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute vandalised the hall and triggered the clash over taking drugs at Aziz Hall,’ he added.Â
Tejgaon Industrial Area police station officer-in-charge Shamim Rahman said that they heard that the reason behind the clash was taking drug.
‘We also heard that 20-25 students were injured. Police and army members are working together to bring the situation under control,’ the OC added.
He said that additional police force were deployed in the area and would sit with the two parties soon to resolve the problem.
