Jahangirnagar University鈥檚 security officials handed over a battery-run rickshaw driver to police on Monday, following allegations of reckless driving that caused the death of a first-year student on November 19.
The driver, Md Arju, was detained early Monday from Gerua village near JU and taken to Ashulia police station by university officials.
He was identified by two passengers of the rickshaw鈥擩U students Abu Hayat and Muntakim Nahid鈥攁nd a pedestrian Nayeem Ahmed.
JU proctor AKM Rashidul Alam stated that a medical examination revealed an injury mark on Arju鈥檚 neck consistent with the timeframe of the accident. 鈥楾he mark supports claims of his involvement in the incident.鈥�
Ashulia police station officer-in-charge Abu Bakor Siddik confirmed the arrest and announced plans to seek a three-day remand for Arju when presenting him to court on Tuesday.
Arju鈥檚 family, however, denied the allegations, claiming he was wrongfully blamed. His daughter Ashrafon Arjena argued that Arju was repairing a damaged rickshaw on the day of the accident and was not driving.
鈥楬e was taking a break at a tea stall when the accident occurred, as seen in CCTV footage. The injury mark on his neck is old,鈥� she added.
The accident occurred on November 19 when a speeding battery-run rickshaw struck Afsana Karim Rachi, a marketing department student, on the JU campus. She died to her injuries en route to the hospital.
The incident sparked widespread protests among JU students, who demanded the driver鈥檚 arrest and justice for Afsana鈥檚 death.
