The Democratic Students’ Alliance on Wednesday said that the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union election must not be made controversial by rehabilitating the banned student wing of the Awami League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, and the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh’s student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir.
A joint statement, signed by the student leaders of the alliance, accused the student bodies of being involved in mass killings. Ìý
Earlier on Tuesday, three student bodies had boycotted a discussion meeting organised by the committee formed to determine the nature and dynamics of student politics at the DU, protesting at the invitation extended to Shibir to join the meeting. ÌýÌýÌýÌý
The statement alleged that the DU authorities, despite repeated protest from student bodies, had continued attempts to rehabilitate the Shibir through various tactics.Ìý
Shibir, banned at DU and Jahangirnagar University for the past three decades due to its controversial role in the 1990 mass uprising, has long supported Jamaat-e-Islami’s involvement in the killings and rapes during the War of Independence.
The public verdict against the genocide, oppression, and atrocities of fascist forces during the July-August student-led mass uprising is being undermined through the rehabilitation of Shibir, notes the statement, warning that if this process is continued with the cooperation of the university administration, it will pave the way for the rehabilitation of the BCL through the same means.ÌýÌýÌý
The statement called for an immediate DUCSU election by reforming its constitution and ensuring a fair, democratic, and a conducive political environment.ÌýÌý ÌýÌý
The signatories of the statement were Dilip Roy, president of the Revolutionary Students’ Unity; Rageeb Nayeem, president of the Bangladesh Students’ Union; Saiedul Hoq Nissan, president of the Democratic Students’ Council; Angkon Chakma, president of the Greater Chittagong Hill Tracts Hill Student’s Council; and Taofiqa Priya, acting president of Revolutionary Student-Youth Movement.
