Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday passed on a message to the nation from the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman that urged all to be patient until democracy was restored through elections.
Fakhrul gave the message while talking to journalists at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka city after returning from London.
‘The acting chairperson has urged people to remain patient. We must all act with unity and patience to restore democracy, ensuring that the great victory achieved through the student-led mass movement becomes truly fruitful,’ he said.
Fakhrul said that Tarique Rahman also urged all to focus on preparing for the next elections, describing it as the first crucial step towards the restoration of democracy.
When asked about the return of Tarique, he said, ‘He will return to the country once his legal issues are resolved.’
Responding to the remarks by an adviser alleging that political parties are attempting to undermine the interim government, Fakhrul dismissed the remarks saying that they were anti-political.
‘These remarks are anti-political and unnecessary. Political parties, including the BNP, have always supported an interim government to ensure a democratic transition. I do not understand the motive behind such comments,’ he added.
When asked about Bangladesh-India relations, Fakhrul said that a meaningful solution required sincere discussions between the two nations.
Fakhrul, accompanied by his wife Rahat Ara Begum, returned home on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 12:45pm from London after completing a 12-day visit.
He said that they had a meeting with the BNP acting chairperson during his stay in London and he also spoke to expatriate Bangladeshis and BNP leaders and activists and joined meetings arranged by them.
‘My visit to London was productive and fruitful,’ the BNP leader also said.
