Renowned poet Helal Hafiz died in the capital Dhaka on Friday.

He was 76.


Helal Hafiz was declared dead after he was taken to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital in the afternoon.

BSMMU director Rezaur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the poet was brought dead at the hospital at around 2:35pm.

Interim government chief adviser professor Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow and grief over the passing of the eminent poet.

In a condolence message, Yunus said that the death of Helal Hafiz, a poet of rebellion and love, was an irreparable loss to the Bangla language and literature. The poet was a symbol of youthful energy and a fearless voice against autocracy.

The chief adviser prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

Visiting the residential facility of the poet, Shahbag police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Khalid Mansoor said that Helal Hafiz had been living at the Super Hostel in Paribag for the past three years.

He said the poet slipped and stayed lying down in the bathroom. Security guard of the hostel rescued the poet at about 2:00pm and rushed to the BSMMU where doctors declared him dead, said the OC.

The poet had been suffering from kidney disease, glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure for years and was admitted to hospitals different times.

Helal Hafiz will be buried at the Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in Mirpur following his namaz-e-janaza on the National Press Club premises in the capital after zuhr prayers on Saturday, said Press Club general secretary Ayub Bhuiyan.

Helal Hafiz was born on October 7, 1948.

The poet’s first collection of poems titled Je Jale Agun Jwale was published in 1986 and received huge acclaim.

Nishiddha Sampadakiya, written in 1969, is considered as one of the most cited poems. The line from the poem — ‘It is the best time for one to go to war who is in the youth’ — was widely used in posters, graffiti works, slogans inspiring youths to get prepared for the War of Independence and movements against autocratic regimes and  the military regime in 80s.

His second collection of poems titled Kabita Ekattar was published after 26 years in 2012.

Helal Hafiz also worked as a journalist for many years in different newspapers, namely Purbadesh, Desh and Jugantor.

He received different awards, namely Jashore Sahitya Puraskar in 1986, Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2013 and others.
