At least 35 people were arrested in a joint drive at Suhrawardy Udyan on Sunday afternoon.

The drive was jointly conducted by the magistrate of the Department of Narcotics Control, Dhaka University proctorial team, law enforcement agencies, and the army.

Confirming the arrests, Dhaka University proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said that the operation began at around 6:30pm.

Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Khalid Mansoor said that narcotic users prowled in the park, hiding in bushes during the day and coming out in the dark of night, turning the entire area into a hub for their activities.

‘Visitors to the park often face difficulties because of the presence of these people, and drug-related altercations frequently occur,’ he said.

‘Only those found on the spot with narcotics have been arrested. A team of about 200 personnel participated in today’s operation. A similar operation was conducted a few days ago, during which around 50 people were detained,’ said the proctor.
