A second-year student of American International University-Bangladesh who was stabbed by muggers in Narayanganj, died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday night.
The victim, Mohammad Simanto, 20, breathed his last at 11:30pm.
His uncle, Mohammad Galib, said that a group of up to four muggers blocked Simanto in the Deobhog area of Narayanganj, near his home, while he was on his way to the university at around 6:00am on December 12.
When the muggers attempted to snatch Simanto’s bag, he resisted, which led the muggers to stab him in the abdomen, chest, head, and legs, leaving him seriously injured, Galib added.
DMCH police camp in-charge Md Faruk said that Simanto’s body was kept at the hospital’s morge for a post-mortem examination.
Home adviser retired lieutenant general Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Sunday directed the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to increase patrolling in order to reduce mugging and other criminal activities.
‘The mugging incidents usually take place at late night and this is why we have asked the police to increase patrolling in order to decrease the mugging incidents,’ said Jahangir while briefing reporters after holding the fifth advisory council meeting on law and order at the secretariat.
