
No one was arrested in the past 24 hours till Tuesday afternoon over the attack on the recently formed platform Jatiya Nagarik Committee in Barishal city on Monday.
The attack allegedly carried out by leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s front organisations, Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal and Krishak Dal, on a rally by the platform at Bibir Pukur Par in the city left at least five people injured.
Police claimed that they were investigating the matters over the attack that left five people injured at the rally organized to mark the 54th Victory Day celebration.
‘We have received a complaint on Yesterday and are investigating the incident for taking legal action. None was arrested over the incident,’ Barishal Kotwali police officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday.
According to witnesses and victims, about 50 leaders and activists of Juba Dal and Krishak Dal allegedly carried out the attack on a rally organised by the Jatiya Nagarik Committee to mark Victory Day in the presence of police personnel at about 10:30am on Monday.
‘We organised the programme marking Victory Day. The attack was carried out by around 100 people of Juba Dal and Krishak Dal in the presence of police. Police remained silent during the attack,’ committee’s central joint member secretary Mahmuda Alam Mitu, who was present during the attack, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
She said that at least five people were injured in the attack and the attackers vandalised chairs, tables and tortured the members of the Jatiya Nagarik Committee and guests present at the programme.
Mahmuda filed a complaint with the Kotwali police over the incident in the afternoon against Juba Dal Barishal city unit leader Aktaruzzman Shaon and 90 or 100 unidentified people.
Mahmuda said that the police did not arrest anyone in this regard so far.
Asked about the Nagorik Committee’s allegations over police’s silent role during the attack, the Kotwali OC said, ‘I was not present on the spot. We will take legal action after investigation into the incident.’
