Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Tuesday warned about a spell of rainfall likely to start on Friday morning, describing it a rather rare weather event.

‘Low pressure areas are not rare over the Bay of Bengal at this time of year. What is rare is the area coming so close to Bangladesh,’ meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

The wet spell will start impacting coastal areas such as Khulna on December 19 with the low pressure area moving inland towards Dhaka over the few days.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to occur over Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions over the 72 hours starting at 6:00am on December 20, the BMD said.

This winter started rather early despite the overall fact remaining that winter weakened in terms of the number of cold days and spread.

Farmers are not ready for the potential rain at this time of year which is known as the dry season.

Potato growers are particularly at risk. Bad weather harming potato farming caused its price to rise to a historic level recently.

Farmers have been advised to improve their fields draining arrangements.
