Leaders of the Jatiya Nagarik Committee, a platform of the youths who played a pivotal role in the student-led mass uprising, on Monday said that the platform would work to build Bangladesh on equality, human dignity and social justice, which were promised in the proclamation of independence.

Referring to the student-led mass uprising, they also said that youth along with common people braved bullets to abolish fascist regime and they were prepared to fight with ballot if needed in the future.

They also criticised Indian aggression in Bangladesh and demanded bringing ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League to book before holding the national election.

The young leaders made the remarks at a rally at Shahbag in the capital Dhaka after a procession marking the 54th Victory Day.

Jatiya Nagarik Committee chief organiser Sarjis Alam said that Hasina made the citizens of Bangladesh either agent or slave to establish ‘Mujibabad’ during her fascist regime.

‘People were not allowed to become citizens in the past 16 years. The student-led mass uprising has brought an opportunity to become citizens,’ said Sarjis.

‘Jatiya Nagarik Committee will work to build Bangladesh on equality, human dignity and social justice,’ said Sarjis, adding that youths along with common people would resist all fascists and dictators in the new Bangladesh.

He also mentioned that the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman went against the interest of Bangladesh, destroyed the country’s constitution and leased the country’s sovereignty to India to establish ‘Mujibabad’.

Muhammad Nasiruddin Patwary, the platform’s convener, said that Bangladesh was going through a transitional period and facing attacks on its sovereignty by Indian Hindutva and ousted Awami League.

He urged all to become unite to fight against two enemies — Mujibabad and Indian Hindutva — in South Asia.

Nasiruddin called all the people to vow to resist rehabilitation of Awami League, Mujibabad, extortion, tender fraud in the country and also to resist against aggression of foreign countries in Bangladesh.

‘There will be no election before bringing killer Hasina and AL to book,’ said Nasiruddin adding that those who will force for election before the trial would be considered dishonest and enemy of the nation.

He demanded that those who were involved in killing, enforced disappearance and killing in the border areas must be brought to book.

Addressing the sacrifices of people for the country’s independence, the platform’s member secretary Akhter Hossen slammed Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s post on his X handle about Bangladesh’s Victory Day.

Akhter said that Modi claimed the victory of Bangladesh as the victory of India without accepting Bangladesh’s victory on December 16.

‘The Bangladesh government must protest at Modi’s remarks,’ demanded Akhter.

The platform’s joint chief organisers, SM Shahriar and Nizam Uddin, among others, spoke at the rally.
