Two people, including a leader of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, were stabbed to death while enjoying a Victory Day cultural function at Nachol upazila in Chapainawabganj on Tuesday night.
The deceased were Masud Rana, 22, son of Ezabul Haque, and Md Raihan, 15, son of Abdur Rahim of Kholshi village under Fotehpur Union Parishad in the upazila.
Local people said that Masud was assistant secretary of Nachol upazila BCL.
A seriously injured person named Sumon was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while three others were given primary treatment, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Chapainawabganj reported.
According to the witnesses and the police, Shaheed Zia Smrity Sangha organised the cultural function at Mallaickpur cattle market on Tuesday night, marking Victory Day.
During the cultural programme, two groups locked into a clash, attacking each other with sharp weapons leaving Masud and Raihan dead on the spot and several others injured, they said.
Claiming Mausd its leader and Raihan an activist, the BCL on its verified Facebook post on Wednesday claimed that the duo was killed for writing ‘Joy Bangla’ on a wall.
Jahangir Alam, elder brother of deceased Raihan, said that his brother had recently taken part in the primary school certificate examination and had never been involved in politics.
Md Sajidur, brother of deceased Masud, said that his brother was stabbed to death due to a previous enmity, not for any political issues.
He said that there was an arbitrary meeting at the village several days ago as his brother, who used to work as a day labourer at a local guava orchard, locked into a scuffle with the other labourers over a trivial matter.
Fahad Akid Rehman, medical officer at the Chapainawabganj 250-bed District Hospital, said that Masud and Raihan were brought dead.
‘Bodies of the deceased bore marks of sharp weapons,’ he said, adding that they had referred three injured, who were brought to the hospital with the deceased, to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Md Abul Kalam Shahid, additional superintendent of the Chapainawabganj district police at a press conference on Wednesday noon said that Masud and Raihan were stabbed to death over previous enmities.
He said that labourers Shahin and Salam had recently locked into a scuffle as Shahin secretly recorded and posted a video of Salam urinating at the guava orchard on the social media.
‘While Salam along with others was returning home after watching the cultural function, Shahin and his men carried out a sudden attack on them with sharp weapons leaving at least six people, including Masud and Raihan injured,’ he added.
The police official said that local people rushed the injured to the Chapainawabganj 250-bed District Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared Masud and Raihan dead.
Nachol police station officer-in-charge Monirul Islam said that deceased Masud’s father filed a case with the police station, naming 10 persons, including Shahin.
