Port and customs officials at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar said on Thursday that the customs clearance for 380 sacks of rice, which arrived from the Maungdaw Port to Teknaf on Tuesday night, was underway.
Initially, upon the arrival of the consignment of rice — weighing about 20 tonnes — at the Teknaf land port, customs officials withheld the clearance as the import-related documents were sealed and signed by the Arakan Army.
The rebel group on December 8 claimed that it captured the last Myanmar army outpost in Maungdaw, a town in the Rakhine State of Myanmar, gaining a full control of the 271-kilometre-long border with Bangladesh.
Bangladesh does not maintain any official ties with the rebel group in Myanmar.
BM Abdullah Al Masum, a customs officer at the Teknaf Port, said the rice sacks had already been unloaded.
‘Now, the importer concerned has been asked to submit necessary documents, including the food ministry’s approval for the import,’ Masum said, adding that the consignment would receive customs clearance once the authenticity of the documents was verified.
