
A Sylhet court on Thursday put a former additional deputy commissioner of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police on five-day remand in a case filed for shooting a photojournalist to death during the student-led mass uprising in July.
SMP additional deputy commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam confirmed to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· about the court order against the former ADC Sadeq Kausar Dastagair.
He said that Police Bureau of Investigation Sylhet office inspector Mohammed Morsalin, also investigation officer in the journalist murder case, produced Dastagir before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Sylhet at around 5:00pm seeking seven-day remand for him.
‘The court, however, granted 5 days to interrogate him in police custody,’ SMP officer Saiful Islam said, adding that a team of the PBI arrested Dastagir in Sherpur district on Wednesday afternoon.Â
A regional daily’s photojournalist ATM Turab was shot dead allegedly by the SMP officer Sadek Kawsar Dastagir during a clash between students and police at Zindabazar in the Sylhet city on July 19.
Turab’s elder brother Abul Ahsan Md Azraf had filed a murder case with the court on August 19 against 18 named people, including the former home minister Assaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former deputy inspector general of police Ajbahar Ali Sheikh and SMP former ADC Sadeq Kausar Dastagir, and about 250 unidentified people.
