A female locomaster of the Bangladesh Railway got death threats and harassed by a section of passengers after the engine of the train failed on the Narayanganj-Dhaka route on Saturday.
Salma Khatun is the first woman who joined the railway as a junior locomaster and after 21 years currently she is running local trains on the busy Dhaka-Narayanganj section as a locomaster.
She said that on Saturday morning she came to Narayanganj from Dhaka by running a train and then started for Dhaka from Narayanganj at around 11:00am.
After reaching the Gendaria area, the engine failed and then the passengers came out of the train and gathered surrounding the engine.
‘They were shouting and calling me to get down,’ Salma said, adding, ‘After I got down, they verbally abused me severely for bringing this locomotive.’ She alleged that during the incident neither a train guard nor a member of the Railway Security Force came to her rescue.
Railway director general Afzal Hossain said, ‘I have heard about the incident from you and I will take action after knowing about it,’ he added.
