
The authorities of Rajshahi University expelled 18 students for different terms on various charges including attacking the processions of Student Movement Against Discrimination and assaulting fellow students, said a press release on Saturday night.
The university authorities, however, did not disclose the names of the expelled students.
‘We don't want to reveal the expelled students’ identity right now. Hopefully, you will know their identity when the copy of the decision will be sent to the concerned department’, said university proctor Professor Mahbubur Rahman.
Meanwhile, several RU officials on condition of anonymity said that most of the expelled students were linked to Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student organization of the Awami League.
The charges brought against the expelled students are – attacking on the peaceful programmes of Student Movement Against Discrimination, intimidating and torturing students, ousting students from their allotted seats in the halls, forcing students to join political programmes, seat trade, blackmailing students, taking drugs in the halls and on campus, ragging, and searching students’ mobile phones, pend drivers and personal belongings illegally.
Professor Mahbubur said that the punitive measures were taken following the recommendations of the university disciplinary committee.
Among the eighteen students, the press release reads, five students were expelled from the university for life, five for two years, four for one year, and three were expelled for one semester.
Besides, two students were fined Tk 5,000 and the residency of fourteen students were also cancelled, the press release added.
RU vice-chancellor Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib said that they had taken punitive measures against those students depending on the type and extent of their misdeeds.
