The authorities of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall of Rajshahi University on Sunday asked its residential students having involvement in the politics of the banned student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, to leave the hall immediately.

‘Those residential students who were directly or indirectly involved with the banned organisation Chhatra League or were part of the organisation’s RU central and hall unit committees but have not cancelled their residency yet, are being informed that your residency will be cancelled within a short period of time subject to proper proof,’ said a notice put up on the hall’s notice board on Sunday.

‘The same rule will be applied to anyone who will come to the hall administration with a recommendation in favour of the BCL activists,’ added the notice.

Professor Mahbubar Rahman, provost of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, said that they issued the notice following the demand of the residential students.

‘Two days ago, some students came to my office and alleged that some followers of banned BCL were staying at the halls and were carrying out their activities,’ he said, adding that he asked the students to lodge a complaint with him so that he could take immediate action.

RU proctor professor Mahbubur Rahman said that they had asked each of the hall administrations to prepare a list of those who were involved in beating students and the staff of residential halls, driving out students from the halls, vandalism, threatening and misbehaving with hall provosts.

‘The Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall administration, however, could not comply with the directive. It might be for that reason, they have issued a notice’, he added.

Earlier on October 23, the government in a gazette notification banned BCL under the Anti-Terrorism Act on allegation of its involvement in various activities against public security, including murder, torture, common room-based oppression, seat trading at student halls, tender manipulations, rape and sexual harassment at various times after the independence of Bangladesh, especially during the past 15 years of the dictatorial regime of Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India for shelter amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5.
