M Tamim

Professor M Tamim joined the Independent University, Bangladesh as vice-chancellor on Monday.

He has been appointed as the IUB VC for a four-year term, said a press release.


Before joining the IUB, he served as a professor of petroleum and mineral resources engineering and dean of the faculty of chemical and materials engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.

Professor Tamim earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in mechanical engineering from BUET, completed his master鈥檚 degree at the Indian Institute of Technology, and obtained his PhD in petroleum engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada.

His research interests span reservoir engineering, energy economics, regulation and planning, development and application of numerical and analytical computer models, and reservoir management.

He has also worked extensively on greenhouse gas mitigation, energy efficiency improvements, and energy-related environmental solutions.

Over his career, he has supervised numerous MSc students and published extensively in national and international journals.

Since 1995, Professor Tamim has held various positions related to energy policy formulation, planning, and regulation under successive governments.

He took a one-year leave from academia to manage the power and energy ministry during the tenure of the caretaker government in 2008.

He also briefly served as pro-VC of BRAC University from 2019 to 2020.

Professor Tamim is a member and the founding chairperson of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Bangladesh Section, and a life fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
