
Leaders and activists of the Student Movement Against Discrimination handed over Munshiganj’s Gazaria union parishad chairman and freedom fighter Shafiullah Shafi to the police early Wednesday.
Shafiullah’s wife Umme Halima said that leaders and activists of the movement cordoned off the house of Shafiullah, who has been ill for the past one year due to a brain stroke, at around 12:30am and handed him over to the police at around 2:30am.
Saifullah’s son Rasel Ahmed said, ‘His father is a freedom fighter and was not involved in any murder.’ÌýÌý
Confirming the incident, Gazaria police officer-in-charge Md Aminul Islam said that Shafiullah, a former vice-president of the Awami League’s Gazaria upazila, was sent to Munshiganj Sadar Police Station in the morning.
Munshiganj Sadar police inspector for investigation, Sajib Dey, said that Shafiullah was arrested in an attempted murder case involving a student named Dipu on August 4.
Meanwhile, Munshiganj’s Basail union parishad chairperson Saiful Islam Juboraj, 65, was arrested in a murder case of the student-led July-August mass uprising on Wednesday. Ìý
Munshiganj Sadar Police Station inspector Sajib Dey said that he was arrested in the murder of 34-year-old Sajal Molla, who was killed on August 4 during a clash between students and AL in Munshiganj town, at his UP office.
Saiful, a former vice-president of AL Basail union, was sent to the court, he added.Ìý
