A youth was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people at Gowainghat upazila in Sylhet in the early hours of Wednesday suspecting him to be a cow lifter.

The victim is Helal Miah, 32, of Datari village at Dowbari union under the Gowainghat upazila, police said.

Local residents said that a group of about eight people, including Mosharraf Hossain, Amir Uddim and Abdus Salam of Islampur Gangpar village under Madyajaflong union of the Gowainghat, picked up Helal from Jaflong Tea Garden blaming him for stealing a cow.

They along with their associates beat him senseless after tying him to a tree, they said.

Later, the group members took Helal to the Madyajaflong union office on Tuesday night and also beat the victim severely there once again leaving him critically injured, the locals said, adding that the perpetrators also forced the victim to drink water mixed with lime and sand.

On information, Helal’s relatives with the help of local people rescued Helal in a critical condition from the spot at around 3:00am on Wednesday and he died while being taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital, the police and locals said.

Confirming the matter, Gowainghat police officer-in-charge Tofayel Ahmed said that Helal’s death was caused by beating.

‘According to allegations made by locals, the victim died because of beating and feeding him with water mixed with lime and sand,’ he said.

The police officer told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the body was sent to the SOMCH at noon for a post-mortem examination.

‘A case will be filed after receiving a written complaint from the victim’s family,’ he said in the evening, adding that drives are on to arrest the people involved in the incident.
