
A firefighter lost his life after being hit by a truck while responding to a fire at Building 7 of Bangladesh Secretariat in the capital early Thursday.
The deceased is Md Sowanur Zaman Nayan, a Tejgaon station firefighter hailing from Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur.
Fire Service and Civil Defence director general Brigadier General Muhammad Jahed Kamal confirmed the details at a briefing at the scene on Thursday morning.
‘He was critically injured after being hit by a speeding truck while he was crossing the road to connect water pump lines,’ said Talha Bin Zasim, station officer of the fire service’s media cell.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
His namaz-e-janaza was held on the Directorate of Fire Service and Civil Defence premises, where home affairs adviser retired lieutenant general Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury paid respects to the coffin of firefighter Nayan. He would be buried in his village in Mithapukur of Rangpur.
Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Mohammad Khalid Mansur said that the driver and helper of the truck were sent to jail on Thursday afternoon.
The fire originated on the sixth floor of the building 7 at the secretariat at 1:52am on Thursday.
The blaze was fully doused at about 11:45am, after 10 hours of efforts by 19 firefighting units with 211 officers and employees from 12 fire stations of Dhaka.
