A man suspected to be a robber was beaten to death on Thursday night by villagers in Highjadi union of Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj.
Deceased Md Billal, 45, was known in the area as Billal Dakat and was a resident of Highjadi union, said the Araihazar police.
A woman was also mass beaten and injured during the incident and was admitted to Araihazar Upazila Health Complex under police custody, the police said, adding that she was also suspected to be a member of the robbery gang.
The police did not name the woman.
According to the police and local people, in an attempt to escape, the woman jumped into a pond but villagers dragged her from there and beat her.
Araihazar police officer-in-charge Enayet Hossain said on Friday that the incident occurred at about 10:30pm on Thursday when a gang of 6鈥�7 robbers were attempting a robbery in Kahendi village.
Quoting the local people, police officer Enayet said that the villagers sensed the gang鈥檚 presence and chased them catching Billal. The others managed to flee the scene.
鈥楾he villagers beat him to death,鈥� he said.
No case was filed regarding the incident as of 6:00pm Friday, he added.
According to human rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra, 114 people were beaten to death in 11 months in 2024. The number was 51from January till December in 2023.
