Chief adviser professor Muhammad Yunus has conveyed his profound grief and deep condolences on the passing of former Indian prime minister and president of Indian National Congress Manmohan Singh, who was a close friend of Yunus.

In his messages, the chief adviser described Manmohan Singh as a person of great humility, a visionary leader and a statesman, who was known for his unwavering commitment to ensuring the welfare of the people of India.


Meanwhile, the central government of India has declared a seven-day national mourning period to honour Manmohan Singh鈥檚 memory. All government programmes scheduled for Friday have been cancelled, while the Congress party has also postponed all events, including its Foundation Day celebrations, for the next seven days, as announced by general secretary KC Venugopal.

Yunus said that the late Indian prime minister would be remembered for his contributions to India鈥檚 economic transformation.

He stated that Manmohan Singh鈥檚 leadership not only shaped the future of India but also contributed to strengthening the bond of friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation between Bangladesh and India.

Referring to Manmohan Singh鈥檚 role in promoting regional cooperation, the chief adviser highlighted the late leader鈥檚 vision and firm commitment to regional peace, prosperity and role in advancing South Asian cooperation.

He urged the South Asian countries to work together to build on the rich legacy of his ideas and work as a tribute to Manmohan Singh.

Professor Yunus extended, on behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh, heartfelt condolences to the family of Manmohan Singh, and the government and the people of India.

Manmohan Singh, known as the architect of India鈥檚 economic liberalisation, died Thursday evening in Delhi at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness.
