Several hundred former armed forces members who were sacked or forced to retire by the now ousted Awami League regime on Sunday held a sit-in near Shaheed Jahangir Gate in the capital for about two hours, pressing for their three-point charter of demands, including reinstatement of their jobs with all facilities.
Protesters under the banner of Sahajoddha blocked the crossing near Jahangir Gate from about 11:00am to about 1:00pm, causing severe traffic congestion from Banani to Bijoy Sarani amid public suffering.
Their two other demands are: in case job reinstatement is not possible, the government must include them in the pension scheme, and the judicial system and legal structure must be reformed to stop such arbitrary termination of armed forces members.
A high level team of the Armed Forces Division held a meeting with Sahajoddha platform chief coordinator Naimul Hasan.
‘The Armed Forces Division assured us that they would form a council to discuss about our demands within five working days,’ Naimul announced.
Protesters cleared the road following Naimul’s announcement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tejgaon Division deputy commissioner for Traffic Md Rafiqul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that vehicular movement returned to normalcy after 1:00pm. ‘Vehicular movement in the area halted for two hours from 11:00am as protesters took position on the road,’ Rafiqul said.
