The number of income tax returns filed online has surpassed 10 lakh, with registrations for online return filing exceeding 16 lakh.

To facilitate the process of filing and paying income tax returns for the 2024-2025 tax year, the National Board of Revenue launched the online return filing system on September 9.

Through this platform, individual taxpayers can efficiently prepare and file their returns using the NBR website.

The system provides multiple payment options, including internet banking, debit or credit card payments, and mobile banking.

Taxpayers also have access to features for downloading and printing copies of filed returns, receipts, income tax certificates, and TIN certificates. Additionally, users can retrieve and print e-Returns filed in previous years.

The eTax Service option on the NBR website allows taxpayers to report any issues related to the e-Return process via email, with the assurance that such concerns will be addressed promptly.

According to a press release, the NBR has established round-the-clock support through its call centre and email to resolve taxpayer queries.

To simplify the e-return registration process, the NBR has introduced a user-friendly system. Taxpayers are required to have a Biometric SIM linked to their national identity card for successful registration. The linkage can be confirmed by dialing *16001#.

For those unable to obtain a Biometric SIM due to fingerprint-related issues, the NBR has implemented special measures to ensure inclusivity.

Taxpayers without a Biometric SIM can visit the NBR office, Room 717, under the Second Secretary (Tax Information Management and Valuation), to apply in person for e-return registration.

The deadline for filing tax returns has been extended multiple times this year. Typically, November 30 marks the last day for submitting tax returns for the fiscal year that ended in June.

However, on December 24, the NBR announced that taxpayers would have until January 31, 2025, to complete their submissions without incurring any penalties. The NBR has urged taxpayers to finalise their returns within this extended timeframe.
